I Timothy 1:18-2:15-How To Deal with a Controversial Passage  (Part 1)

Sunday, February 24, 2008

I.  THE PROBLEM:

·         Not every passage in the Bible is CRYSTAL CLEAR.

·         Too often, we ARGUE OVER the unclear and IGNORE the crystal clear.

·         We don’t know how to AGREE TO DISAGREE.

II. THE PASSAGE:

      FIRST THE EASY STUFF:

ü How A Good Start Goes Awry.

► We stop TRUSTING GOD and stop OBEYING GOD.

I Timothy 1:18-20 (NIV)

18Timothy, my son, I give you this instruction in keeping with the prophecies once made about you, so that by following them you may fight the good fight, 19holding on to faith and a good conscience. Some have rejected these and so have shipwrecked their faith. 20Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme.

I Timothy 2:1-2a(NIV)

1I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone— 2for kings and all those in authority,…

I Timothy 2:2b-4 (NIV)

…that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 3This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.

I Timothy 2:5-7(NIV)

5For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6who gave himself as a ransom for all men—the testimony given in its proper time. 7And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle—I am telling the truth, I am not lying—and a teacher of the true faith to the Gentiles.

ü What To Pray For And Why It’s Important.

EVERYONE and EVERYTHING.

          ü What’s A Man to Do?

I Timothy 2:8(NIV)

8I want men everywhere to lift up holy hands in prayer, without anger or disputing.

► God wants HOLINESS and HARMONY.

 Now the tough part:

          ü What’s A Woman to Do?

I Timothy 2:9-10(NIV)

9I also want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, 10but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.

I Timothy 2:11-12(NIV)

11A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. 12I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent.

I Timothy 2:13-15(NIV)

13For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. 15But women will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety.

► Is this about a WOMAN or a WIFE?

► Is this for THEN or for NOW?

Proverbs 31:10, 22(NIV)

A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. She considers a field and buys it;  out of her earnings she plants a vineyard. She makes coverings for her bed; she is clothed in fine linen and purple.

Galatians 3:28(NIV)

28There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
